Monkeypox virus MPXV Sensitivity Cassette

Product Description:

Monkeypox is an infectious disease that causes a painful rash, swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, myalgia, back pain, and fatigue. Most people recover fully, but some become severely ill.

Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). It is an enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus of the genus Orthopoxvirus in the family Poxviridae, which includes smallpox, vaccinia, vaccinia, and other viruses. The virus has two distinct clades: Clade I (with subclades Ia and Ib) and Clade II (with subclades IIa and IIb).

A global outbreak caused by clade IIb began in 2022 and continues to this day, including in some African countries. Outbreaks caused by clades Ia and Ib are also increasing, affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries in Africa. As of August 2024, clade Ib has also been found outside of Africa.

The natural reservoir of the virus is unknown, but various small mammals such as squirrels and monkeys are susceptible.

Monkeypox is primarily spread from person to person through close contact with someone who has monkeypox, including family members. Close contact includes skin-to-skin (such as touching, or having sex) and mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-skin contact (such as kissing), which can also include face-to-face contact with a person who has monkeypox (such as talking, or breathing in close proximity to each other, which can produce infectious respiratory particles).

People who have multiple sexual partners are at higher risk of contracting monkeypox.

People can also contract monkeypox from contaminated objects such as clothing or bed linens, from needlestick injuries during health care, or in community settings such as tattoo parlors.

The virus can be passed to the baby during pregnancy or delivery. Infection with monkeypox during pregnancy can be dangerous to the fetus or newborn and can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, or complications for the mother.

Transmission from animals to people can occur if bitten or scratched by an infected animal, or from animals to people if the animal is infected during activities such as hunting, skinning, trapping, cooking, playing with animal carcasses, or eating animal meat. The animal reservoir of the monkeypox virus is still unknown and further research is ongoing.

More research is needed on how monkeypox spreads during outbreaks in different settings and under different conditions.
